For decades we treated the mouth like it ended at the gumline. Bleeding gums were a brushing problem. A cavity was a sugar problem. Dry mouth was an annoyance you pushed through with a glass of water. Clean better, we said, and the mouth will behave.
Modern science has dismantled that model completely.
The mouth isn’t a sealed box of teeth. It’s a living, breathing ecosystem wired directly into your cardiovascular system, your blood sugar, your immune response — your whole body. And the organisms driving gum disease aren’t just bad houseguests in your mouth. Some of them are long-range pathogens with a passport to the rest of you.

This is where the old “just a gum problem” framing falls apart.
Your heart. People with periodontitis carry roughly a 20% higher risk of cardiovascular disease than people with healthy gums.
